?

Dr Iveren Winifred Nyinoh is a Lecturer in the Department of Biosciences at the University of Exeter whose work spans biology, microbiology, molecular biology, medical education, and equity in higher education. She is a Module Lead, Academic Personal Tutor, undergraduate research project supervisor, and Biosciences Academic Lead for student support, as well as the Lead for embedding sustainability across the Biosciences curriculum. She combines expertise in microbiology with a strong commitment to inclusive teaching, educational innovation, and student success, creating learning environments that equip students to address contemporary scientific and global health challenges.

?

She completed her PhD in Microbial Sciences at the University of Surrey, where she investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying drug synergy in mycobacteria. Her scientific interests span microbiology, host–microbe interactions, antimicrobial resistance, the gut microbiome, and the links between microbial processes, human health, and behaviour. She applies this interdisciplinary perspective in her teaching, designing learning activities that connect biosciences to clinical and global health challenges. For example, she integrates Education for Sustainable Development into her teaching on public health and antimicrobial resistance, helping students explore the relationships between microbiology, sustainability, and global health equity.

?

An award-winning educator and recognised Senior Fellow of Advance HE (SFHEA), Dr Nyinoh has taught across Biosciences, Medicine, Medical Sciences, Neuroscience, and Sport and Exercise Medical Sciences. She has received multiple institutional awards, including the University of Exeter Success for All Champion for Student Experience and Support (2024) and the Individual Champion for Student Experience and Success Award (2025).?Her work has attracted competitive internal funding from the University of Exeter, including the Exeter Education Discovery Grant (2023), Global Exeter Innovation Fund (2024), Exeter Education Incubator Phase 2 Grant (2025), and the Exeter Open Innovation Transnational Fund (2025), supporting projects that promote belonging, inclusive, and globally connected learning.

?

Dr Nyinoh is is an established voice on equality, diversity, and inclusion at Exeter. As BMBS Race Equality Resource Officer (RERO Devon) and Biosciences Academic Lead for Student Support, she supports students experiencing discrimination within the University and during clinical placements, contributing to the University's Race Equality Charter work. She has led and co-led several strategic initiatives to improve belonging and success for international and ethnically diverse students, including peer mentoring programmes, wellbeing and inclusion initiatives, and educational workshops addressing race, allyship, and bystander intervention, for example, the BMBS Year 3 EDI induction session on Navigating Microaggression in Clinical Placements and the Role of the Bystander. Outside academia, Dr Nyinoh served as a UK delegate for UN Women (#CSW69 and #CSW70), contributing to international dialogue on gender equality and inclusive development.

?

Her commitment to widening participation extends beyond the University. She actively mentors Black students through the Black Heritage Universities Group (B-HUGS), delivered outreach activities through the Devon Healthcare Hub, and works with local schools to inspire the next generation of scientists through practical microbiology and mentoring.

?

Before joining the University of Exeter, Dr Nyinoh was a lecturer at Benue State University, Nigeria, where she taught microbiology, genetics, biotechnology, molecular biology, and microbial biochemistry. She supervised undergraduate and postgraduate research, coordinated internships and field courses, and held several academic leadership roles supporting curriculum development and quality assurance. She previously worked at the University of Kent as a Lecturer on the Applied Biosciences Degree Apprenticeship, leading several modules and contributing to the Student Voice Committee and the Summer School programme.

?

Looking ahead, she aims to continue leading the embedding of sustainability across the Biosciences curriculum, while mentoring students and advancing innovative educational research.
